| NastyNasty. That is the only word to describe Xanga's interface now. I switched back to "my old home page style" just so I could figure out how to post a new post!
It looks like it was designed by Microsoft people. This is definitely a step down for Xanga. A desperate move to try to retain all the people that they have lost to f-book and every other site. With even more coercion to try their premium features. Nope. No thanks.
Xanga, we don't like it.
| PovertySam and I will be leading the Glory Youth Retreat this coming August. We will be discussing Poverty with them. Last year we helped out at the CBC Family Retreat with a game that helps understand the world's economy. We are going to do the same thing again AND be the speakers too! We will discuss the issue of poverty in the world, in the US and God's view on it from the Bible. And of course we'll help the students understand what they can do in response to this issue. How exciting!
If you know of anyone that is currently making a difference with the poor, here or overseas, please let me know. We really want to be able to connect these students with resources. Also, if you have read any good books regarding this or had any experience yourself, tell me.
I've listed one of the best resources I have found above in the "Currently Reading..."
| Do It Chicken!Ok, here it is. I say it's time to download Safari and try it out. I reported that mine was having problems, but that was only because of a special add-on that I had. Once I took that off, my Safari 3 was up and running no problems! ...and I love it!
I have recently downloaded Safari for the PC and used it for awhile. I like it. I will certainly always use it whenever I am on a PC. And from my experience it is at least as fast as Firefox, if not faster. That is what Sam and I had used mostly on non-Mac. We have abandoned Internet Explorer as it is just riddled with all kinds of issues (you name it, it has an issue with it.)
You'll probably want to import your bookmarks. Just click on the upper left "FILE" and go down to "Import Bookmarks." (Before you open this window, you should probably open your Windows Explorer and search for your bookmarks, so you know where they are.)
Now, one of the first things you'll notice is the appearance. First of all, the window doesn't confirm to all the other Windows with the borders. It is just silver, with a blue scrollbar. You'll also probably notice the way the fonts look. They are smoother and not as pixelated. I really like that. The reason is the philosophy behind the way each different browser shows you the fonts. Safari sticks more to the way the font is supposed to be, while Firefox and Internet Explorer try to snap the font into a pixel grid. Here is an example.
So, if you like the smoother look. Go for it. Or if you'd just like to see what all my hype is about.

| Talk About A Clean Desktop!I decided to clean up my desktop and this is what happened.
So heed my warning: Be careful when you sort all those things on your desktop. You never know what is under there!

| Browser Got You Down? For some reason I have been spending more and more of my free time exploring the power of my new MacBook. And I am loving finding out all the cool things built into it to make it so amazing. I am finding newer and faster shortcuts, more powerful applications (programs for you Windows users) and better ways to make what I already do more efficient. I love it!
One of the cool things I did recently, was to make a movie (iMovie, comes with every Apple) for Sam and Mary Ann all about their guinea pigs, with just about 5 min of footage I shot on Sam's camera. The footage wasn't the highest quality, as it just came from a regular digital camera, but the DVD turned out so professional looking I was amazed. I even asked Sam to give me all her old video footage so I could edit it into a movie that she would view over and over, instead of her video footage just sitting in a folder on her computer... In fact, if you have some you'd like to give to me to try to put together in a professional looking way, bring it on! I'd love to explore the power of this little laptop!
I have also put together a few slideshows using Apple's presentation software, called Keynote. (You know, like the keynote speaker...) Yes, there is Powerpoint (made by Microsoft) for Mac, but it really bogs the system down and it doesn't respond like Keynote does. And the best thing about Keynote is that it takes advantage of the great graphics available to the Mac for incredible, audience gasping, transitions and effects. It's wow.
There is a yearly conference in San Francisco called World Wide Developers' Conference (WWDC), held by Steve Jobs, the CEO of Apple. This is the time of year when Apple announces all its cool new stuff. It started last week, June 11, and just wrapped up. This year, of course, the iPhone was announced and explained, and so is their OS upgrade. You know how Windows went from XP to Vista? Apple is going from OS 10.4 (affectionately called Tiger) to OS 10.5 (called Leopard). ...and they are really adding a lot of cool new things. I watched Steve's Welcome address online and was really impressed. EA Games is also going to be releasing all it's newest cool games on the Mac platform now too... and they haven't given up their relationship with Intel. Bigger and better things are still in process.
Now let me tell you how this affects you, the Windows users, and the Apple users reading my Xanga. Just as they released iTunes for Windows, they have also now released a Windows version of their browser, Safari, for anyone to download. Now what is impressive about it is that it is WAY faster than IE 7, and a lot faster than Firefox. Don't toss out your firefox or IE 7 yet. Safari 3 is still a beta release with a lot of bugs. But when you hear that it is stable you have to download it and try it out. Just open Safari, and IE 7 beside each other and load up some pages. Find some pages with a lot of photos, or news pages you go to a lot. Just see who gets there faster. Tests show that on a Mac, and on a PC, that Safari gets there at least twice as fast. I think you'll be impressed. If you are brave go ahead just try it. And if you don't like it just use the uninstall function and throw it all in the trash. Go for it. And let me know what you think. And if you are on an Apple, Safari 3 is faster even than Safari 2.
...and just wait til you see how they've pimped out iChat! Wow! (You can now chat upside down... or as George Washington!)
Here's the link to Apple's home page, which has Steve's Keynote address, Safari 3, and an explanation of Leopard.
Edit: I tried Safari 3 and had to keep hitting reload to see the pages. ...but it was pretty fast. Even with the time it took hit the reload button, it was still faster than my Firefox. Hmmm. But Safari 2 is stable, so I uninstalled right back to it, no problems. I will wait for Safari 3 to be more stable too. C'mon developers, work this one out for us quick!
